A 17 year old girl was stabbed in the back of the neck on a residential street in Brierfield, Lancashire, on Friday afternoon. A 30 year old man from Brierfield is in police custody on suspicion of attempted murder. He hasn't been charged. The girl's been discharged from hospital.

It's the latest knife attack on a British teenager to land in a country that's already on edge from the last two.

What happened on Wood Street

Lancashire Police were called to Wood Street, Brierfield, at 3.06pm on Friday 12 June after reports that a 17 year old girl had been stabbed in the back of the neck. Armed officers arrived within minutes. The 30 year old suspect was arrested at the scene shortly after.

A police spokesman said the incident was "serious" but the girl's injuries weren't believed to be life threatening or life changing. She was treated in hospital, has since been discharged, and is now recovering at home with her family. Lancashire Police have confirmed she was communicating with officers and medical staff while she was in hospital.

Witnesses described a significant armed police presence on Wood Street through Friday afternoon and into the evening.

What police have confirmed about the suspect

The suspect is a 30 year old man from Brierfield. Lancashire Police on Saturday confirmed he's British born and of Pakistani heritage. He remains in custody. Police have said there are no further suspects.

A spokesman for the force said there's "currently no evidence to suggest this attack was racially motivated." That is the police position as of Saturday afternoon. The investigation is still in its opening 48 hours.

The suspect hasn't been named and hasn't been charged. He's been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, which under British law means police have a reasonable basis to detain and question him. Whether that becomes a charge is a decision for the Crown Prosecution Service.

What the local MP said

Oliver Ryan, Labour MP for Burnley, said on X that his thoughts were with the victim and that the attack would "shock and frighten everyone in our area."

He went further on the speculation already running online. "To address speculation, it is my understanding that both the attacker and the victim are Brierfield residents, and British," he wrote. "The victim is in the care of the NHS, we all wish her a quick recovery after this deeply traumatic, life changing event."

On the man in custody, Ryan said: "The attacker is in custody, and is a very unwell, dangerous individual."

He asked others commenting to "stick to known facts and not exploit for clickbait this already distressing situation for people." Extra police patrols are in place in Brierfield over the weekend.

The third knife story Britain has had in a fortnight

A 17 year old girl knifed in the neck in broad daylight on a residential street is the kind of story that, on any normal week, would be its own national headline. This isn't a normal week.

Eleven days ago One News Australia reported that British police handcuffed a dying 18 year old Henry Nowak on a Southampton pavement after his killer told them he was the victim of a racist attack. The killer, Vickrum Digwa, has since been convicted of murder and sentenced to life with a minimum 21 years.

Five days ago One News Australia reported an attempted beheading on a north Belfast street, where bystanders armed with a hurley stick pinned the attacker down until police arrived. The victim, NHS radiographer Stephen Ogilvie, 44, survived but lost his left eye, with the right eye also at risk. He's in an induced coma and described by his family as stable.

Hadi Alodid, 30, a Sudanese national of Duncairn Avenue, Belfast, has been charged with the attempted murder of Mr Ogilvie, threats to kill an NHS radiographer, and possession of a bladed article.

He appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court via videolink with an Arabic interpreter, refused legal representation, made no reply to the charges, and was remanded in custody for four weeks. He has leave to remain in the UK until 2028. The case is active and reporting is bound by sub judice.

Four days ago Belfast erupted into two nights of unrest, with marked migrant homes torched and a Glider bus burned out in fury over the Kinnaird Avenue attack.

Brierfield doesn't sit neatly inside either of those frames. The suspect is British born. Police have said there's no evidence of a racial motive. The local MP, who knows his constituency, has gone out of his way to say the attacker isn't an outsider. None of that erases what's happened, which is another teenage girl on another British street walking home and being stabbed in the neck.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 16,344 knife offences in London in 2024 to 2025, the highest figure on record. England and Wales recorded around 53,000 knife offences in the year to March 2025. One fatal stabbing happens every 17 hours. That's the country Brierfield sits inside, regardless of who's holding the knife.

The investigation continues

Lancashire Police are still appealing for witnesses and any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from Wood Street and the surrounding area on Friday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lancashire Police on 101, quoting log 0836 of June 12, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The 30 year old man remains in custody. The investigation continues.
